David Anderson was a Senior when I was a Sophomore. He was tall and handsome and played basketball. I thought he was probably cool since he played basketball and was older than me. After my graduation I was working with his mom at Weber State Credit Union. One day David came in to see her and withdraw money. I was his teller and we talked for a couple of minutes. After he left, his mom told me David wanted my number. Three minutes later he called and asked me out for that evening.
When I got into David's truck for the date he suggested we eat at either of the two restaurants I disliked- Sandy's or Maple Gardens. At Maple Gardens he told me had served his mission somewhere where the food was spicy and bragged a lot about his tolerance. He ordered something spicy, couldn't eat it because it was too spicy, and helped himself to most of my meal.
I mentioned my hobby of rock climbing and a good climbing gym in Riverdale. He decided to take us there after dinner. The gym had a group of regulars who were the coolest, hardest-core guys in the city probably. Being a novice climber and a girl made me intimidated by them and I always tried hard to not look pathetic in front of them. When we got there, David couldn't climb any route. At all. He was embarrassingly terrible. When we decided we had had about enough, I told David we couldn't leave until he completed one route, even if it was the kid route up to the slide.
He tried and fell and tried and fell again. He stretched his arms to the highest handholds he could reach, then planted his feet against the wall and started inching them up. His butt stuck out farther and farther from the wall. Everyone in the gym was staring. He maneuvered his butt closer to the slide until he made contact, then rolled/shimmied into a sitting position, and flopped down the slide.
He laid sprawled out at the bottom of the slide triumphantly. I laid down near him and he told me how his last girlfriend once covered him from neck to waist in hickeys.
We went to his house to play video games. When we got there he realized he was locked out of the house and became horrified. He tapped on the door for his parents to let him in. He tapped again. I said I didn't think they could hear it. He got out his cell and called his parents. He apologized repeatedly for waking them up and getting them out of bed to unlock the door. The lock clicked and David said wait. We stood in silence for a full minute and then went inside. We made our way through the pitch black house to the basement. We reached the bottom of the stairs and David whispered, "Come find me," and vanished. I heard him go inside a room off the hallway and felt my way over. I flicked on the light and caught him standing in the middle of the room in a pounce position with a devious/sheepish expression. Then he got a bloody nose.
I played Mario Kart alone for twenty minutes while he attended to his bleed. He eventually shoved a wad of tissue in his nose and played Mario Kart with me for a bit.
Around midnight we got to his truck to go home and he sat on the panic button and set off the car alarm.
